BK stretch goals + Rock Band Fights Evil
over 4 years ago – Tue, Oct 01, 2019 at 02:21:29 AM

Happy Monday, all.  Book production is moving right along.  Art is coming in, writing and editing continue apace, we've got some groups doing playtesting, and we're beginning work on layout.  All looking good so far.

The BackerKit / preorder store is also going gangbusters.  Almost 90% of our Kickstarter backers have filled out their surveys, and we're also picking up some new preorder backers.  All of this is great, and is helping us meet our post-Kickstarter stretch goals.  Which goals?  Well, I'm glad you asked!

1) We hit a lot of stretch goals in the Kickstarter campaign, but there were also lots we didn't hit, which means some really fantastic settings that got left out of the book.  Happily, your add-ons have so far funded THREE more microsettings that will be included in the Micronomicon.

Songs of Oversea; Knowledge Arcana, Inc.; Fall of Telmara. Illustrations by Anthony Cournoyer.

So the Micronomicon will now include Justin Finley's Songs of Oversea, Mario Cordova's Knowledge Arcana, Inc., and Shawn Carman's Fall of Telmara.  Goal accomplished!  Thank you all!  (And we might be able to fit in more.)

2) One of the add-ons is an anthology of fantastic stories about magic written by a number of Micronomicon setting authors, including Christopher Ruocchio.  The book would also include some brand-new magical stories from other fantasy and science fiction authors, such as DJ Butler.  But this book will only happen (and you will only be charged) if we get 100 pledges for the book.  Right now we have 15, so if you want to read these stories, be sure to add on the anthology.

3) During the Kickstarter campaign, we had a backer's choice poll to add a new microsetting every time we added another 100 backers.  Right now, including preorder backers, we stand at 396.  Once we hit 400, I will open up another poll and you all will once again get to pick your favorite setting to include in the book.  So, please keep spreading the word!

Finally, I just want to call your attention to a Kickstarter happening right now that looks like a lot of fun to me.  In fact, I backed it.  Rock Band Fights Evil is not just an awesome book series, but now a hellacious mini-boardgame from Chris Ferguson and DJ Butler:  In Rock Band Fights Evil, a rock band of damned fools is on the run from the powers of hell.  Play hell or play the rock band in this two-player micro-boardgame.  If that sounds as fun to you as it does to me, click through and drop a few bucks to pick up a sweet new 2 person game.

That's all for today.  Rock on, fight evil, and I'll check in with you again in a week or two.

Thanks, everybody!

Store open!
over 4 years ago – Thu, Sep 19, 2019 at 06:38:46 PM

Happy Thursday, everybody! We have good news and better news. The good news is that we're making great progress on the book, and still planning to have it to you on schedule.

The better news is that the BackerKit store is open!  Surveys should be arriving in all your inboxes soon.  Hooray! And boy does our store have a bunch of awesome stuff.  Here's what you can find there:

The Micronomicon itself, in PDF, softcover, or hardcover form.  For Kickstarter backers, prices are the same as they were during the campaign.  (But no early bird specials, sorry.)  If you didn't back the Kickstarter, you can use the BackerKit store to get our special preorder price, which is still a big savings.  (For the PDF, for example, the backer price is $7, the preorder price is $7.99, and the anticipated retail is $11.99.)

Decks of Micronomi-Cards!  A deck of 55 spell cards you can also use for your favorite card games, or for any of several special new games designed specifically for this deck!  We also are selling Fat Goblin Games' Southern Cross Trading Company catalog, a book of magic items crafted for TD2e, as well as Quirkville Games' 13 Wicked One-Shots, a system-neutral book of one-shot adventures and maps.

Love the art of Nicolás Giacondino?  Want a one-of-a-kind signed original to hang on your wall?  You can grab a Scroll of Divinity and get one of the physical originals of Nic's Iconic Mage illustrations. (Available in Black & White or Full Color!)

And if 19 microsettings are not enough for you, take a look at the Invocation of Creation, which lets you fully fund a new setting of your choice, including new custom art from Anthony Cournoyer!

And there's more.  We have fiction from Quincy J. Allen and from Carolyn Ivy Stein, both set in their respective Micronomicon settings.  We have complete fantasy novels from myself and from Josh Vogt.  And as a special Backer Kit stretch goal, we have a book of Stories from the Micronomicon that we will do IF at least 100 people sign up to buy it.  This would include stories from myself and lots of our setting writers, including Christopher Ruocchio, as well as other fantasy writers like D.J. Butler, who will write an all-new story about a sinister magic book.  I hope that sounds as fun to you as it does to me, because I really want to do this book.

Anyway, there's more, but I'm just going to let you all go see for yourselves.  We've worked hard to pack this store full of fun and exciting items. So, make like a truck full of dice and let the good times roll

More art, more settings, more progress!
over 4 years ago – Fri, Aug 16, 2019 at 12:08:09 AM

Greetings, all.  The project is going very well, and I have some news to share.  Kickstarter has released the funds, and so payments are flowing out to artists and other contributors. Hooray!

In related news, I have some awesome new art from Nicolás Giacondino to share.  Here are the finished Iconic Mage illustrations from the chapters on Alchemists, Familiars, and Beastspeakers.

Just so you know, we are including the Scrolls of Divinity add-on in the BackerKit store, which means you will be able to purchase the actual physical originals of these illustrations, in case you want some incredible fantasy art to hang on your wall.

Speaking of BackerKit, we are making big strides here as we prepare the virtual store for launch.  We are going to be doing some very cool stuff with our add-ons and preorders, including using the revenues to fund at least three more microsettings!

  • KNOWLEDGE ARCANA, INC., by Mario Cordova. KnA Inc. is a dungeoneering firm specializing in retrieving powerful magical artifacts from war zones and politically sensitive areas.  And they're hiring!
  • THE PSI-MAGE WAR, by Shawn Carman.  A new psionic virus transforms mages into a hive mind determined to rule the world. And only those with psionic gifts can stop them.
  • SONG OF OVERSEA, by Justin Finley. Inspired by Filipino and Polynesian mythology, this setting lets you use Shamanic and Bardic magic to combat the semidivine leviathans of Undersea, including the monstrous serpent Bakunawa the Scorned.

And speaking of microsettings, voting has concluded in the Backers Choice III poll.  This one was crazy close, with only 12 votes separating first place from last!  In any event, the winner is...

  • THE LOST STRAIGHT SEA-ROAD, by John D. Payne.  Explore the untamed seas in search of the secret Silver Haven of the missing Fey.  (Includes ocean/island encounter tables and hexcrawl rules.)

There's lots more exciting stuff to tell you, but it will have to wait for our next update, which will hopefully announce the opening of our BackerKit store.  Thank you all for your support, and I look forward to chatting with you soon.

What comes next
over 4 years ago – Mon, Jul 29, 2019 at 05:02:38 PM

Greetings, Micronom-noms!

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how things have been going since the close of the Kickstarter campaign.   While Kickstarter is processing pledges, we are moving forward on writing and art for the book (and the cards).   You can check out the Production Report (below) for details, but I wanted to just hit a couple of highlights.

On the art side, beautiful illustrations continue to roll in.  (My inbox right now is just. So. Cool.)  More than half of our feature illustrations (including iconic mages, setting illustrations, and custom art) are complete.  And completely amazing.

Illustrations by Anthony Cournoyer for Inkslingers, Clash of the Pastrium, and Dark Alleys of the Soul.

On the writing side, Part I (Rules) is completely drafted and being copyedited (although I may go back and add one more chapter).  For Part II (Settings), assignments have been made, deadlines have been set, and contracts have been signed.  Writing has begun on every setting, with some already complete and in early edits.  These are going to be lots of fun, gang.

Okay, a few other quick news items.

1) Although we ended with a robust 16 microsettings funded, we are working on ways to get more of them in the book.  This will probably involve . . .

2) . . . the BackerKit store we are building.  You will be able to adjust your pledges as well as purchase add-on items.  (I will be telling you about these in our next update, but BOY are there some cool ones here.)  The BackerKit will also allow people who missed the Kickstarter to pre-order the Micronomicon, the card deck, and other add-on items-- although not at the prices that you KS backers got.  :)  More info on all this coming soon.

3) Please vote in the Backer's Choice III poll.  I need to get art specs to Anthony very soon, so if you want your vote to count, cast it in the next 24 hours or so.  (And as a reminder, it is okay to select more than one setting if there's more than one you'd like to see in the book.)

That's all for now!  Expect another update in about a week, once Kickstarter has processed the pledges and BackerKit is ready to open our store.

Thank you all for your continuing support!
